5. "But the bicycle?" I persisted.
6. "Of what nature are they?"

1. See some light in the darkness, but it may possibly flicker out.Meanwhile, please send by messenger, to await return at BakerStreet, a complete list of all foreign spies or international agentsknown to be in England, with full address.
2. It was indeed like old times when, at that hour, I found myselfseated beside him in a hansom, my revolver in my pocket, and thethrill of adventure in my heart. Holmes was cold and stern and silent. As the gleam of the street-lamps flashed upon his austere features,I saw that his brows were drawn down in thought and his thin lipscompressed. I knew not what wild beast we were about to hunt down inthe dark jungle of criminal London, but I was well assured, from thebearing of this master huntsman, that the adventure was a most graveone- while the sardonic smile which occasionally broke through hisascetic gloom boded little good for the object of our quest.I had imagined that we were bound for Baker Street, but Holmesstopped the cab at the corner of Cavendish Square. I observed thatas he stepped out he gave a most searching glance to right and left, and at every subsequent street corner he took the utmost pains toassure that he was not followed. Our route was certainly a singularone. Holmes's knowledge of the byways of London was extraordinary, andon this occasion he passed rapidly and with an assured step througha network of mews and stables, the very existence of which I had neverknown. We emerged at last into a small road, lined with old, gloomyhouses, which led us into Manchester Street, and so to BlandfordStreet. Here he turned swiftly down a narrow passage, passed through awooden gate into a deserted yard, and then opened with a key theback door of a house. We entered together, and he closed it behind us.The place was pitch dark, but it was evident to me that it was anempty house. Our feet creaked and crackled over the bare planking, andmy outstretched hand touched a wall from which the paper was hangingin ribbons. Holmes's cold, thin fingers closed round my wrist andled me forward down a long hall, until I dimly saw the murkyfanlight over the door. Here Holmes turned suddenly to the right andwe found ourselves in a large, square, empty room, heavily shadowed inthe corners, but faintly lit in the centre from the lights of thestreet beyond. There was no lamp near, and the window was thick withdust, so that we could only just discern each other's figureswithin. My companion put his hand upon my shoulder and his lipsclose to my ear.
3. "I had one or two questions which I wished to ask you, LordHoldhurst."
4. Dear Mr. Sherlock Holmes:
5. "Well, as you seem to have made the discovery, whatever it may be,and the vicar to have had it second-hand, perhaps you had better dothe speaking," said Holmes.
6. My outer door was flung open, there were blundering footsteps in thepassage, and Ian Murdoch staggered into the room, pallid, dishevelled, his clothes in wild disorder, clawing with his bony hands at thefurniture to hold himself great. "Brandy! Brandy!" he gasped, and fellgroaning upon the sofa.

1. "'"I am strong enough, Mr. Musgrave," said she.
2. "And you think that they brought you back all that way when you wereunconscious?"
3. "That you are never beaten."
4. "Oh, yes. It is impossible to exclude them when the church is open.""This gentleman was not one of your wife's friends?"
5. 1893
6. fresh-complexioned young fellow, with a frank, honest face and aslight, crisp, yellow moustache. He wore a very shiny top-hat and aneat suit of sober black, which made him look what he was-a smartyoung City man, of the class who have been labelled cockneys, butwho give us our crack volunteer regiments, and who turn out morefine athletes and sportsmen than any body of men in these islands. Hisround, ruddy face was naturally full of cheeriness, but the corners ofhis mouth seemed to me to be pulled down in a half-comical distress. It was not, however, until we were in a first-class carriage andwell started upon our journey to Birmingham that I was able to learnwhat the trouble was which had driven him to Sherlock Holmes."We have a clear run here of seventy minutes," Holmes remarked. "Iwant you, Mr. Hall Pycroft, to tell my friend your very interestingexperience exactly as you have told it to me, or with more detail ifpossible. It will be of use to me to hear the succession of eventsagain. It is a case, Watson, which may prove to have something init, or may prove to have nothing, but which, at least, presents those:unusual and outre features which are as dear to you as they are to me.Now, Mr. Pycroft I shall not interrupt you again."

1. "Yes, yes, brandy!" he cried. "The man is at his last gasp. It wasall I could do to bring him here. He fainted twice upon the way."Half a tumbler of the raw spirit brought about a wondrous change. Hepushed himself up on one arm and swung his coat from his shoulder "ForGod's sake, oil, opium, morphia!" he cried. "Anything to ease thisinfernal agony!" The inspector and I cried out at the sight. There, crisscrossed upon the man's naked shoulder, was the same strangereticulated pattern of red, inflamed lines which had been thedeath-mark of Fitzroy, McPherson.
2. "When this was pulled down, the bell in the kitchen must have rungloudly," he remarked.
3. Colonel Walter died in prison towards the end of the second yearof his sentence. As to Holmes, he returned refreshed to hismonograph upon the Polyphonic Motets of Lassus, which has since beenprinted for private circulation, and is said by experts to be the lastword upon the subject. Some weeks afterwards I learned incidentallythat my friend spent a day at Windsor, whence he returned with aremarkably fine emerald tie-pin. When I asked him if he had bought it,he answered that it was a present from a certain gracious lady inwhose interests he had once been fortunate enough to carry out a smallcommission. He said no more; but I fancy that I could guess at thatlady's august name, and I have little doubt that the emerald pinwill forever recall to my friend's memory the adventure of theBruce-Partington plans.
4、 "Well, I have no connection with any other people who havebeen making inquiries," said Holmes carelessly. "If you won'ttell us the bet is off, that is all. But I'm always ready to backmy opinion on a matter of fowls, and I have a fiver on it that thebird I ate is country bred."

"I know that country, Holmes. It is full of old houses which arenamed after the men who built them centuries ago. You get Odley'sand Harvey's and Carriton's- the folk are forgotten but their nameslive in their houses.

      But it was only for a moment that we were at fault. At one corner,the corner nearest the room which we had left, there was a seconddoor. Holmes sprang to it and pulled it open. A coat and waistcoatwere lying on the floor, and from a hook behind the door, with his ownbraces round his neck, was hanging the managing director of theFranco-Midland Hardware Company. His knees were drawn up, his headhung at a dreadful angle to his body, and the clatter of his heelsagainst the door made the noise which had broken in upon ourconversation. In an instant I had caught him round the waist andheld him up while Holmes and Pycroft untied the elastic bands whichhad disappeared between the livid creases of skin. Then we carried himinto the other room, where he lay with a clay-coloured face, puffinghis purple lips in and out with every breath-a dreadful wreck of allthat he had been but five minutes before.}

"'"It's an old acquaintance of mine who has come down in the world,"said she. When I promised her I would say nothing she kissed me, and Ihave never seen her since. I have told you now the whole truth, and ifI withheld it from the police it is because I did not realize then thedanger in which my dear friend stood. I know that it can only be toher advantage that everything should be known.'
