1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Carrie thanked him and walked briskly out, while the young mangazed after her through one of the side windows of his gildedcoop.
2. "Oh, something for street wear."
3. "Would you mind giving me a little something?" he asked this manboldly.
4. The drummer pinched his lip nervously.
5. Chapter XXIII
6. With the wane of the afternoon went her hopes, her courage, andher strength. She had been astonishingly persistent. So earnestan effort was well deserving of a better reward. On every hand,to her fatigued senses, the great business portion grew larger, harder, more stolid in its indifference. It seemed as if it wasall closed to her, that the struggle was too fierce for her tohope to do anything at all. Men and women hurried by in long, shifting lines. She felt the flow of the tide of effort andinterest--felt her own helplessness without quite realising thewisp on the tide that she was. She cast about vainly for somepossible place to apply, but found no door which she had thecourage to enter. It would be the same thing all over. The oldhumiliation of her plea, rewarded by curt denial. Sick at heartand in body, she turned to the west, the direction of Minnie'sflat, which she had now fixed in mind, and began that wearisome, baffled retreat which the seeker for employment at nightfall toooften makes. In passing through Fifth Avenue, south towards VanBuren Street, where she intended to take a car, she passed thedoor of a large wholesale shoe house, through the plate-glasswindows of which she could see a middle-aged gentleman sitting ata small desk. One of those forlorn impulses which often grow outof a fixed sense of defeat, the last sprouting of a baffled anduprooted growth of ideas, seized upon her. She walkeddeliberately through the door and up to the gentleman, who lookedat her weary face with partially awakened interest.

计划指导

1. Curiously, as he troubled over his future, his thoughtsoccasionally reverted to his wife and family. He had avoidedsuch thoughts for the first three years as much as possible. Hehated her, and he could get along without her. Let her go. Hewould do well enough. Now, however, when he was not doing wellenough, he began to wonder what she was doing, how his childrenwere getting along. He could see them living as nicely as ever, occupying the comfortable house and using his property.
2. "It will be all right when I get used to it."
3. "Yes, look up Shanahan. He was just asking for you a momentago."
4. She hastened around to the side entrance and was taken up by theelevator to the fourth floor.
5. Hurstwood was already confronted, and recognised his friendKenny, the stock-broker.
6. He hastened to his room with rising spirits and changed hislinen. As he did so, he made up his mind that if Carrie wasalone, or if she had gone to another place, it behooved him tofind out. He decided to call at once.

1. "What sort of a place is it?" he asked, feeling in his veins asif now he might get something good also.
2. That little soldier of fortune took her good turn in an easy way.She felt a little out of place, but the great room soothed herand the view of the well-dressed throng outside seemed a splendidthing. Ah, what was it not to have money! What a thing it wasto be able to come in here and dine! Drouet must be fortunate. He rode on trains, dressed in such nice clothes, was so strong, and ate in these fine places. He seemed quite a figure of a man,and she wondered at his friendship and regard for her.
3. "I have three cents left. These men must be put to bed somehow. There are"--counting--"one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve men. Nine cents more will putthe next man to bed; give him a good, comfortable bed for thenight. I go right along and look after that myself. Who willgive me nine cents?"
4. There is a more subtle result of such a situation as this, which, though not always taken into account, produces the tragedies ofthe world. The great create an atmosphere which reacts badlyupon the small. This atmosphere is easily and quickly felt.Walk among the magnificent residences, the splendid equipages, the gilded shops, restaurants, resorts of all kinds; scent theflowers, the silks, the wines; drink of the laughter springingfrom the soul of luxurious content, of the glances which gleamlike light from defiant spears; feel the quality of the smileswhich cut like glistening swords and of strides born of place, and you shall know of what is the atmosphere of the high andmighty. Little use to argue that of such is not the kingdom ofgreatness, but so long as the world is attracted by this and thehuman heart views this as the one desirable realm which it mustattain, so long, to that heart, will this remain the realm ofgreatness. So long, also, will the atmosphere of this realm workits desperate results in the soul of man. It is like a chemicalreagent. One day of it, like one drop of the other, will soaffect and discolour the views, the aims, the desire of the mind, that it will thereafter remain forever dyed. A day of it to theuntried mind is like opium to the untried body. A craving is setup which, if gratified, shall eternally result in dreams anddeath. Aye! dreams unfulfilled--gnawing, luring, idle phantomswhich beckon and lead, beckon and lead, until death anddissolution dissolve their power and restore us blind to nature'sheart.
5. Carrie looked gratefully at Hurstwood, and smiled at Drouet. Theformer took the air of a mere friend. He was simply there toenjoy himself. Anything that Carrie did was pleasing to him, nothing more.
6. "What makes you stare at me so? What's the matter?"

1. In the bedroom, off the front room, was Carrie's trunk, bought byDrouet, and in the wardrobe built into the wall quite an array ofclothing--more than she had ever possessed before, and of verybecoming designs. There was a third room for possible use as akitchen, where Drouet had Carrie establish a little portable gasstove for the preparation of small lunches, oysters, Welshrarebits, and the like, of which he was exceedingly fond; and, lastly, a bath. The whole place was cosey, in that it waslighted by gas and heated by furnace registers, possessing also asmall grate, set with an asbestos back, a method of cheerfulwarming which was then first coming into use. By her industryand natural love of order, which now developed, the placemaintained an air pleasing in the extreme.
2. "They say you can get things lots cheaper there."
3. "So long," said the other, smiling affably and going on.
4、 "I'd like it ever so much," she replied.
5、 "Mrs. Wheeler, let me introduce Mr. Ames, a cousin of mine," saidMrs. Vance. "He's going along with us, aren't you, Bob?"

"Why, woman," he exclaimed, "you did it for me! Now you go outthere and do it. It'll be fun for you. Just do as you did inthe room. If you'll reel it off that way, I'll bet you make ahit. Now, what'll you bet? You do it."

{ When he had finished it, he stood holding it in his hands. Theaudacity of the thing took his breath. It roused his ire also--the deepest element of revolt in him. His first impulse was towrite but four words in reply--"Go to the devil!"--but hecompromised by telling the boy that there would be no reply. Then he sat down in his chair and gazed without seeing, contemplating the result of his work. What would she do aboutthat? The confounded wretch! Was she going to try to bulldoze himinto submission? He would go up there and have it out with her, that's what he would do. She was carrying things with too high ahand. These were his first thoughts.

They were off for a drive--she, looking about and noticing fineclothing, the young men voicing those silly pleasantries and weakquips which pass for humour in coy circles. Carrie saw the greatpark parade of carriages, beginning at the Fifty-ninth Streetentrance and winding past the Museum of Art to the exit at OneHundred and Tenth Street and Seventh Avenue. Her eye was oncemore taken by the show of wealth--the elaborate costumes, elegantharnesses, spirited horses, and, above all, the beauty. Oncemore the plague of poverty galled her, but now she forgot in ameasure her own troubles so far as to forget Hurstwood. Hewaited until four, five, and even six. It was getting dark whenhe got up out of his chair.
